Theatre for Social Change Project:

The First Revolution is When you Change your Mind.

Join us as we celebrate the 2024 graduating cohort of Hagley Theatre School in the Theatre for Social Change Project, where students explore pressing social issues through the power of performance. Inspired by the words of American poet and musician Gil Scott-Heron, this project reflects a journey of connecting with communities and amplifying voices through drama.

Theatre for Social Change is an approach that extends social and political engagement beyond traditional theatre boundaries. This project seeks to represent the unique perspectives of specific communities, shedding light on social injustices and offering a platform for marginalized voices. Through this experience, students gain a deeper understanding of theatre's role in societal transformation.

Our students’ performances are drawn from real stories and explore the following themes: Women and Leadership, Drag Queen and King, Actors and Wellbeing, and Women and Menopause. Each piece is under 30 minutes and seating is limited. Following the performances, the audience is welcome to participate in a forum discussion responding to the work.

We invite you to attend our Theatre for Social Change Project on 4 December at 6pm at Auripo (Hagley College Performing Arts Building). To book your place, please email Mary Davison at mary.davison@staff.hagley.school.nz. Please note that each performance will take place in a different space within our building, meaning limited capacity for our audience so we will operate a first-in-first-served policy for bookings.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to witness the power of theatre in addressing social change!
